NHK Launch 3D Video Bank [3DVIDEO]
Hoping to take advantage of an expected demand for 3D video media, Japanese broadcaster NHK have launched a library of 3D video which includes 250 minutes of stereoscopic content.
NHK MT (Media Technology) has been engaged in the development of 3D HD since 1989 and is now offering 700 cuts of 3D footage for online distribution.
Examples include Underwater (coral reef, tropical fish), Aerial (Hawaiian beech, city centre, Sydney coast line), Clay Animation (short story of funky mice), Science (Yoyo juggling, exploding cracker) and Japanese Culture (sushi, archery).
You can see the full list including samples here.
In similar news, Discovery Access, the online footage licencing division of Discovery Communications launched in March, is gradually adding more 3D content to its library.
During MIPCOM 2011 Jocelyn Shearer, Vice President of Discovery Access, showed 3dfocus.co.uk some CGI 3D clips. Rather than converting live action footage, Discovery Access is going back into the CGI archives to re-render the sequences into 3D. Discovery Access is working with Pixeldust Studios to provide the stereoscopic 3D animations. Pixeldust Studios already works closely with Discovery having worked on the CGI sequences of big Discovery shows such as Powering the Future, Somali Pirate Takedown, Nuclear Nightmare and American Loggers.

It’s a Nice Day for a 3D Wedding [3DVIDEO]
Bruno White Entertainment (Orlando, FL) and Lafayette Hill Studios (Lafayette Hill, PA) recently utilized pre-production models of Panasonic’s AG-3DA1 Full HD 3D camcorder to shoot wedding videos at the Epcot theme park at Walt Disney World Resort and in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
Bruno White Entertainment (BWE), a nationally recognized leader in field production work, delivers original creative content along with broad support in all production services and has a wide range of entertainment, corporate, and commercial credits. BWE has an exclusive contract with the Disney Event Group (Orlando, FL) to shoot corporate events and wedding on various Disney properties.
Lafayette Hill Studios combines elegant still photography with high-quality video production, and has emerged as a leader in special occasion videography. An extensive roster of clients is testimony to the company’s successful combination of special events coverage and emerging video technologies.
For the past several years, BWE has shot hundreds of corporate and event videos for Disney, Microsoft and other high-profile clients with Panasonic AVCCAM solid-state camcorders. Lafayette Hill Studios’ mainstay acquisition tool is the Panasonic AG-HPX500 P2 HD shoulder-mount camcorder.
The AG-3DA1, available August 27, is the world's first professional, fully-integrated Full HD 3D camcorder recording to SD card media. The AG-3DA1 has the potential to democratize 3D production by giving professional videographers a more affordable, flexible, reliable and easier-to-use tool for capturing immersive content. Current 3D systems are large-scale setups in which two cameras are fitted to a rig in parallel, or vertically intersect across a half-mirror. Separate recorders are also required. In the AG-3DA1, the lenses, camera head, and a dual Memory Card recorder are integrated into a single, lightweight body. The camcorder also incorporates stereoscopic adjustment controls making it easier to use and operate.
BWE has shot two weddings in 3D, one in front of the Morocco Pavilion at Epcot, with the reception on the top floor of the Seas Pavilion, and the second at the Disney Wedding Pavilion. (The weddings were also shot in 2D; with the permission of the brides and grooms, an additional shooter covered the events with the 3DA1. 3D selects will be included as a special feature on the couples’ wedding DVDs.)
“I’ve been amazed at the 3D image quality of the 3DA1,” said Terri White, BWE owner/producer. “The camcorder is easy to operate: our videographer was up and running within a couple of hours, and our 3D shooting techniques will only get better and better.”
“Certain wedding traditions, like throwing the bouquet and dancing, look better and more interesting in 3D,” White added. “We envision that 3D will literally add a dimension to the wedding video experience, in that couples will be more likely to immerse themselves in memories and watch the DVDs again and again.”
BWE technical supervisor Kyle Frazer operated the 3DA1 during the two events. “The learning curve on the camcorder wasn’t intimidating, and the footage looks great,” he said. “The iconic Epcot Spaceship Earth Pavilion (an 18-story geodesic sphere) is a real wow in 3D, and certain of the wedding trappings, like the flowers and the exchange of rings, seem to fly out of the screen.”
“The 3DA1’s mix function made it easy to handle convergence and avoid frame violations,” Frazer continued. “Beyond weddings, I see tremendous potential for the camcorder in corporate work, especially for a client like Disney that is already set up for 3D display.”
“Shooting a wedding with the 3DA1 opens up a lot of creative opportunities for the wedding videographer,” said Bernie Mitchell, president of Silver Platter Productions (Knoxville, TN), the 3D production company that worked on location with BWE. “It’s a very flexible camcorder: we extended it up on a monopod to get some really nice high angle shots, and in one sequence, we actually lay on the ground and shot a nice, low-angle shot framing the bride and groom in a doorway. For the second Disney wedding, we moved indoors into the Wedding Pavilion, where the windows frame Cinderella's castle, which looks great as a 3D shot.”
Frazer is editing the 3D footage on Final Cut Pro using the Dashwood Stereoscopic 3D Plugin.
Michael Brand, the principal of Lafayette Hill Studios, has also covered two summer weddings with the 3DA1. (The main camcorder was the HPX500, with the 3DA1 on site with the permission of the couples.)
“I was taking 3D still photos 25 years ago, but until now I couldn’t envision 3D video for weddings,” said Brand. “You’re not going to take a beam splitter to a church! The 3DA1 is the first of its kind in delivering excellent 3D quality with verite style shooting.”
“The camcorder handles details and blacks beautifully,” he said. “Because you can adjust convergence so easily, you can produce gorgeous 3D video that is immersive, not gimmicky. It didn’t take me long working with the camcorder to learn where I had to stand for the best shots.”
“We market our company on the basis of creative storytelling, and 3D certainly adds another level to the narrative,” Brand added. “I envision that the 3DA1 could open doors for us beyond wedding production into areas like digital signage and training.”
Brand is editing the 3D footage on Final Cut Pro with the Dashwood 3D Plugin. “I’ve been showing the 3D material to current and former clients,” he noted. “One recent bride said, ‘I’d like to get married again in 3D!’”

Coca-Cola, Motorola and Visa go 3D [3Dvideo]
3D is making a comeback. The technology that had kids in ’50s cinemas wearing silly paper glasses as they watched “Man in the Dark” and “It Came from Outer Space” is back—and it’s better than ever. But let’s not give James Cameron and his hit movie “Avatar” all the credit. Brand marketers at Coca-Cola, Motorola, Visa and others are incorporating 3D into blockbuster events, too.
“3D is a marketer’s dream,” says Jason Lewin, director-marketing at American Paper Optics, a Memphis-based manufacturer of 3D glasses. “At a trade show, it’s been proven that someone is 78 percent more likely to watch a clip when handed a pair of 3D glasses than without. The great part is that the glasses are made of paper, so it’s low cost and high impact. The promoter puts their information on the side of the glasses and the potential client walks away with them in their pocket.”
Filmmaker Christopher Crescitelli, a 3D pioneer who for five years has been using the technology at live events, introduced the concept to marketers three years ago at a 3D lounge at the Sundance Film Festival. “We naturally see in 3D, so when we see 3D theater representations, our brain is really looking at that as something that is real, unlike a 2D image that you might walk right past,” he says.
Passersby in no way could ignore the eye-catching 3D illusion projected onto the Edison Hotel on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach at this year’s Super Bowl. Sponsored by Motorola and the NFL, the high-powered video projectors transformed the building’s art deco façade into a 3D peek inside the hotel where in-room vignettes took place. Twitter feeds about fan excitement and Super Bowl predictions appeared in word bubbles around the building’s “occupants,” who were portrayed interacting with each other in scenes of daily life. The effect replicated the contacts, posts, messages and photos from sources such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter that the brand’s Motoblur technology delivers to live widgets for immediate reply, right from the device’s screen. During some of the heaviest foot traffic Ocean Drive has ever seen, the real-time Motoblur 3D projection touched at least one-quarter of a million people, with countless more online impressions.
“Ocean Drive is an architecturally driven community, as is the culture that surrounds this area,” says Jean Pierre Le Cannellier, senior director-North American marketing at Motorola Mobile Devices. “It was fitting to create something that not only leveraged this, but also enhanced it in a new way using Motoblur technology. The projection was a unique way to merge and stream real-time content from the online and offline worlds to enhance an event.”
Visa in February utilized 3D to reach three million commuters who passed by an eight-foot by 14-foot projection screen in an underground passageway beneath New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. Brand ambassadors distributed 3D glasses from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily. At other times Olympic spots ran on the screen in 2D.
Designed to promote Visa’s Olympic Go World advertising effort, in which a consumer won a trip to the Olympic Winter Games for life, the 60-second 3D experience and accompanying 3D posters presented the campaign in a captivating way.
“An element of every campaign tries to engage the consumer, and that is what this is,” says David Lane, vp-digital media for CBS Outdoor. “This is what we bring to an area that is unexpected, that the audience will see for the first time, that draws them in and entertains them in a way that they’ve never seen before.”
Coke has been serving up 3D at events since 2006 with the first FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour. Fans were invited to view an inspirational 3D film charting the story of the FIFA World Cup shortly before having their photo taken with the real trophy.
“The film proved to be hugely popular with thousands of fans who visited our events, so we were keen to build on this success during the 2010 Trophy Tour,” says Souleymane Hamed, spokesman for Coca-Cola Sports & Entertainment Marketing. “Using the emotional power of FIFA World Cup footage, our latest 3D film aims to inspire fans to get into a celebratory mood and generate excitement before they have their photos taken with the trophy.”
The 3D film for this year’s Trophy Tour was inspired by the joyous dance celebrations familiar to Africa, especially African soccer. Using a mix of real 3D game footage and 3D computer animation, the film immerses viewers into the action.
Retail events are offering a taste of the 3D action, too. When Santa arrived in November at Bass Pro Shops across the U.S. and Canada, he asked the children in attendance to help him light the Christmas tree in the stores’ lobbies. The kids donned 3D glasses and when the lights came on, the tree was even more spectacular than usual. “People were clamoring for the glasses and had an ‘awe’ experience,” says Larry Whiteley, manager of communications at Bass Pro Shops. “And they were a souvenir of the special day when Santa arrived.”

Ambitious Russian 3D War Drama 'Stalingrad' Begins Filming
German actor Til Schweiger could be involved with the project.
On Thursday, Russian director Fyodor Bondarchuk began shooting the $30 million 3D war drama Stalingrad, one of the most ambitious and expensive film projects in the Russian film industry over the last few years.
The movie is to be focused on the Battle of Stalingrad, a major battle of World War II, in which Soviet troops fought for control over the South Russian city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd), occupied by Nazi troops, and eventually took it in February 1943.
The movie’s budget is to be $30 million, of which $20 million was provided by the state-controled bank VTB and the rest is coming from the producers and as government support.
Stalingrad is being produced by Alexander Rodnyansky, Sergei Melkumov and Dmitri Rudovskiy, and the producers expect the movie to become a box office champion.
“I see a serious box office potential in the movie,” Rodnyansky was quoted as saying as the wire service RIA Novosti. “We have a very good script, on which we have worked for a long time. [The movie has] a strong story, massive battle scenes and, also, interesting and unusual characters.”
“Our financial expectations are $30 million to $35 million at the box office of Russia and CIS and another $30 million to $35 million in the rest of the world,” Rudovskiy told The Hollywood Reporter. “’Stalingrad’ has all chances of becoming one of [Russia’s] top grossing movies ever.”
Bondarchuk’s debut movie, 2005’s 9th Company, was one of the year’s top grossing movies, but his next movie, the two-part sci-fi saga “Inhabited Island”, released in 2009 didn’t perform as well as expected, which the producers attributed to the global economic downturn.
The cast and crew have not been officially announced, but there have been reports in the Russian press that U.S. director of photography Vince Pace and German actor Til Schweiger could be involved in the project.
The release of Stalingrad is scheduled for 2013 to be timed with the 70thanniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad.

Making 3D Presentations with Powerpoint and S3D Presenter [3Dvideo]
The idea of making a stereoscopic 3D presentation to make it more dynamic and attractive is nothing new, however actually creating such a 3D presentation with PowerPoint for example has never been easier as it requires the use of additional software. I’ve already mentioned the XPAND 3D Plugin for 3D Presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, but in my opinion it wasn’t very flexible and easy to use, still it is not that expensive. I’ve however found another solution that seems more practical and flexible for making 3D presentations with Powerpoint, but also much more expensive. I’m talking about the Instant Effects S3D Presenter that the video above shows an introduction of…
The S3D Presenter software allows you to combine traditional 2D media assets (pictures, video, text, etc) with animated 3D models and stereo 3D pictures and video (in side-by-side or over-under format) in a Powerpoint presentation. Apparently with it you should be able to edit your presentations using 3D-enabled monitors such as Zalman Trimon, 3D-ready DLP TVs, iZ3D monitors or 3D Vision-enabled displays, and then display the results in full stereoscopic 3D mode or publish to popular stereoscopic 3D video formats. The S3D Presenter supports projection systems that take dual left/right inputs or any projector or display system compatible with Nvidia’s 3D Vision system according the the company that made the software.
S3D Presenter is supposed to have all the features of Instant Effects’ OfficeFX Presenter software and adding on top of it the stereoscopic 3D support, but unfortunately there is no evaluation version available for the S3D Presenter that you can download and try. There is also no price cited for the software on the website of the company that made it, but considering that it exceeds what the OfficeFX Presenter software offers than it is supposed to be more expensive, and that means more than $1000 USD. But what we see on the official videos demonstrating the software in action and the example 3D Presentation made with the software seems promising.

TV Azteca present firts 3D reality "La Academia 3D" [3Dvideo]
Next August 21 at 6:00 PM (Mexico) will be Azteca América's D-day or, actually, 3D-day. Why? Because Mexico's channel 13 will air the red carpet of reality show La Academia 2011 which will be produced in 3D. Immediately after, at 7:00 PM, the channel will broadcast the ninth season of the show hosted by Rafael Araneda and Bibi Gaytán.
"This is the first time in the world that a reality show is broadcast in 3D. And this will be the first 3D TV show in Mexico and Latin America," Roberto Romagnoli, VP of production and entertainment at Azteca América, said. Mondays through Fridays the audience will be able to follow the everyday life and hard work of contestants and teachers at the music, singing and dancing academy as they prepare for Sunday's performance that will dazzle the live studio audience every week.
This season will also welcome special guests into the school and feature a small talk-show where guests and participants will debate about the latest academy news. "It will be a very special season because the show will receive international stars, not only artists from the music industry worldwide but also Hollywood celebrities that will join the stage of La Academia," Romagnoli said.
A MEGA 3D PRODUCTION
As for the show's production, the executive said that the team visited different shows around the world such as the Eurovisión festival -one of the largest in Europe- to learn more about the kind of quality they wanted to offer Hispanic audiences. "We want to give the audience something new," the executive said. "We had been thinking about producing a 3D show for some time now. And the company has an excellent technical team. We made sure the quality standard and the service was the best the audience could get and we have made it.... It looks like you can actually touch the people on the screen," Romagnoli said.
The show has been designed with 360 technology, not often seen in the region's TV industry. "We have one of the prettiest and highest-quality TV sets in the world," the executive said. A total of 180 people work behind the scenes to take care of every detail involved in a production this big, which started four months ago with auditions in the US, Central America and South America. The show managed to engage 530,000 people between 15 and 40 years old, finally choosing 35 contestants coming from different countries in the region.
"This is the company's most important project of the year, where we have invested the largest amount of money, production work, talent, hours and effort in order to conquer the audience and offer them a time to spend with their families and have fun watching an excellent TV show," the executive said.
The show will also have audience interaction via social networks and La Academia will also be on the internet so "viewers can also take lessons of whatever interests them the most in the music, singing and dancing field," Romagnoli said. "It will be a great TV show," the Argentine executive concluded.

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never 3D [3Dvideo]
In case you couldn't tell from the talk-show appearances and the TV spots, from the billboards and bus ads, from the ceaseless chatter on Twitter, Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never" has finally arrived in theaters after a seemingly endless promotional push that left no channel or digital sphere Bieber Fever-free.
And in case you weren't sure, most everyone who's already seen it seems to agree: The movie is pretty dang good. And that's coming from critics and reporters who don't likely hum "One Less Lonely Girl" in the shower. Whether you're begging your parents for — or are being begged by your kids about — a trip to the multiplex this weekend, check out what reviewers are saying about "Never Say Never."
The Story
"A fairly intimate look at Bieber's life on the road and his beginnings as just another talented kid growing up in small-town Canada, the movie is part-documentary and part-concert film that both embraces and pokes fun at the teenybopper mania that Bieber and his handlers have created. There's a loose countdown structure as Bieber prepares for his first concert at Madison Square Garden, but director Jon Chu is mostly content to zip around Bieber's life and the people who surround him, mixing in live performances with the interviews and fly-on-the-wall recordings. He doesn't exactly pander to the audience, but it's probably no coincidence either that Bieber takes off his shirt twice in the first 10 minutes." — Katey Rich, Cinema Blend
Meet the Real Bieber
"Bieber is a mix of intuitive performer and apparent quick study. As a dancer, his style is endearingly awkward, as if the 16-year-old still has not quite figured out how his body works. ... Yet beneath his polish there is still something unpracticed and a bit goofy to Bieber and his ever-present team of handlers. When a random girl is plucked night after night from the audience for him to serenade onstage, he hands her a big bouquet of roses; as he sings a solo acoustic number, he hangs over the crowd seated in a giant heart. Bieber seems to sit at some rare intersection of the newfangled and the traditional, where camera phones coexist sweetly with swooning romance." — Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times
The Visuals
"Director Jon Chu has done a nice job of building this as a film, as a solid documentary, with a heavy side order of self-aware image-building. It is revealing in ways it may not have been intended to be, but it is crafted well, and the 3-D concert footage is designed to be very experiential. Chu wants you to see how hard the people on stage are working, how crazy it is behind the scenes, and just how much that audience feeds on it and then feeds it back in crazy prepubescent emotional hypermedia." — Drew McWeeny, HitFix
The Dissenters
"While the film makes clear Bieber is a wunderkind who wants to be seen more as a Justin Timberlake than a Rick Astley, his movie retreats from anything near the portrait that Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' posthumously became. That's a shame, because there was drama in Bieber's life. He grew up poor to a single mom in Ontario, Canada, and became a sensation only after posting his second-place finish in a singing competition on YouTube. 'Never,' though, touches only briefly on that childhood. And though Bieber taught himself to play several instruments, the film whisks past his talents to get to his bangs — and does nothing to risk 'Never' 's G-rating." — Scott Bowles, USA Today
The Final Word
"Though anyone who needs convincing won't touch this one with a 10-foot pole, 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never' makes a persuasive case for its titular star as a far more talented-than-usual teen idol. As much a legitimate documentary as it is a 3D concert film and teen girl squeal-delivery device, the film possesses surprising moments of candor on the toil of teenage superstardom, even if the overall effect is purely promotional. Provided it skirts the curse of the Jonas Brothers (who released a similar film just as their popularity began to flatline), it should go over like gangbusters." — Andrew Barker, Variety

Magnum is the first advertising 3D spot on Youtube Mobile [3Dvideo]
With the ever increasing traffic over Google owned video-sharing venue, YouTube mobile site, it is not surprising that the Mountain View web giant last week officially embarked on a broad rollout of advertising to its mobile YouTube site (m.youtube.com) in the US and Japan, following 18 months of testing in a bid to raise funds from the popular, but financially-floundering site.
The Google-owned video venue is not, however, precisely breaking the mold for mobile ads. After performing ad tests on the site around the summer of 2008, Google has settled on banner ads for the platform. It is displaying static banners at the top of its m.youtube.com homepage, browsing pages and search results pages.
The pre-roll ads are skippable, but that does not mean they are not annoying. The new mobile ads seem unobtrusive enough as shown above in the screenshot, but on the small screen they do actually take up a fair chunk of your screen.
“This is an wonder-working way for advertisers to reach YouTube viewers across multiple platforms,” Taylor Cascino, Strategic Partner Development Manager at YouTube said in a blog post.
“In fact, at launch YouTube will immediately provide one of the largest audiences for a mobile ad campaign anywhere on the mobile web.”
These will be sold on a full-day basis, and is being initially rolled out to American and Japanese YouTube mobile websites, that is -- m.youtube.com on your mobile phone's browser.
YouTube will not display ads inside videos being played on phones. Ads also would not become visible on the YouTube applications for iPhone and Android handsets.
In a surprising turn of events, YouTube is selling the ads on a flat fee per day rather than on a CPM basis. Shishir Mehrotra, YouTube's director of monetization, compared the placement to YouTube's front-page ad that is also sold for a daily fee.
“We think it will cater to one of the largest audiences for a mobile ad campaign anywhere on the mobile Web,” he said.
In terms of monetization, YouTube is targeting a platform that is becoming more popular than ever, YouTube touts that “tens of millions” of videos are played each day from its mobile site and that traffic has grown 160% in 2009. Campaigns since it began experiment on YouTube mobile ads have included efforts by L'Oreal, Kia and Sony. Mazda is running a campaign today.
Mehrotra said the mobile ads are another step in YouTube's drive to find an ad model commensurate with the site's wide reach. He promised the ad formats would “evolve.”
“We are just getting started,” he said.
The Google-owned site has been in desperate need of extra funds for awhile now, and still remains in the red. Hence, you can just imagine how good this site traffic will be in terms of potential for more ad clicks and brand campaign awareness.
With Google desperate to turn the fortunes of YouTube around though, it will only be a matter of time before we have to scroll just that little bit more to see a Simpsons clip. If you are a brand campaign manager, you ought to know that those banner ad spots are sold on a full-day basis. You can extend your ad campaign run from the YouTube website to the mobile site. To know how you can go about this, visit this site.
Google has targeted mobile as its next big ads market. It has accomplished that objective on several fronts, including building its own operating system, rolling out the NexusOne phone and inking a deal to pay $750 million for mobile ad network AdMob.
Mehrotra stated that the ad quality would become better with the passing of time as handsets and operating systems both get more sophisticated. “This is starting with what the browsers can support at broad reach,” he said.

Sony PMW-TD300 3D cam [3Dvideo]
Sony seems to offer a new flavor as far as cinematography and digital imaging concerned as it introduces two new single body 3D camcorders just recently. And one of these professional camcorders is the PMW-TD300. Basically, this new camcorder promises to bring greater flexibility when it comes to live shoots thus, giving more freedom to its user to focus on image capture. Sony decided to come out with this new camcorder in order to address the needs of those people who are involved in live 3D production by simply working as perfect complement to the HD cameras currently being used by the leading production companies.
In addition to this, the PMW-TD300 is also expected to give its users and other creative professionals a more flexible and mobile option thus, resulting in getting their best 3D shot. Additionally, the PMW-TD300 is a professional 3D camcorder that comes with a compact shoulder-mounted design that helps in providing a more comfortable and stable shooting platform, which is very important in creating good quality 3D images. It is very simple to operate and also eliminates the burden of going through complicated user adjustments before shooting.
[3D Video after the jump]
In addition to this, the Sony PMW-TD300 also comes with the following specs as well:
- comes with a dual three ½ -inch Exmor Full-HD CMOS sensors
- features a dual lens system
- supports XDCAM EX recording
- comes with the 3D/2D recording modes
- comes with a viewfinder with 3.5-inch type color LCD
- features SxS card slots (L/R x 2)
- offers a maximum recording time of 400 minutes

Sony 3D Bloggie® HD Camera
It's no good guys, you're going to have to shuffle out from under that rock -- 3D is officially here to stay, having infiltrated affordable, pocketable devices like Sony's nifty Bloggie range.
We had a chance to play with the Bloggie 3D at CES 2011, view its lenticular screen -- which lets you watch back your footage without the need for glasses -- and saw a demo of footage shot with the device. Click through the photos above to check out this futuristic gadget, and read on to hear our first impressions.
The Bloggie 3D, or Bloggie 3D MHS-FS3 to give it its full title, is the first 3D pocket camcorder to shoot in 1080p. Around the back of it you'll find two separate lenses, each with its own sensor, which work in tandem to capture footage from slightly different angles.
This is then combined inside the Bloggie and spat out the back, where you can enjoy your masterpieces in on a 2.4-inch lenticular screen, which will show you your videos in 3D, without the need for you to don any ridiculous specs.
We weren't entirely convinced by this panel. Sure, it works, and you can get a 3D effect as long as you hold your head in the right spot, but being so small, it looked a little dark and muddy, so we can't see it actually being that useful when it comes to critically reviewing your footage, when you'll want to be checking that things are properly in focus and so on.
We were more impressed by the lenticular screen in the upcoming Nintendo 3DS, so we reckon it's entirely possible to implement this tech in a convincing way.
Frustratingly, the Bloggie on show at CES wasn't able to shoot any video, and was showing a rolling demo on the screen instead. We were, however, treated to a screening of some 3D footage shot on a Bloggie 3D, for which we donned our 3D specs.
The footage was something of a mixed bag to be honest, clear and smooth enough, and with lots of the 3D stuff working really well. We did notice a few instances where the effect didn't work so well, however, or the Bloggie seemed to have become confused about what was part of the background and what was foreground material.
Based on this, we can see the Bloggie 3D appealing more to amateur movie-makers amused by the 3D novelty than serious video types who need the Bloggie to produce quick, high-quality footage.
The Bloggie 3D has 8GB of on-board storage, and like other Bloggies attaches to your computer via USB, which pops out of the Bloggie's left side, switchblade-style. There's an LED light for brightening up dark environments, and a socket for hooking the Bloggie up to an HD telly via HDMI. It can also shoot 5-megapixel stills.
The Bloggie 3D is looking pretty cool, but we'll need more time to test it before we decide whether it's the next step in camcorder evolution, or just a gimmicky bit of gadgetry. We'll have a review as soon as possible -- it's due out in the UK in April.
