Getty Images uses 3D, 360 and robotic cameras to shoot London 2012 Olympics [Video]

Getty Images, the official Photographic Agency to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), will be capturing this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games using innovative technology that will give customers and consumers a unique and unrivalled perspective of the world’s biggest event.

For the first time, Getty Images’ photographers will be shooting images captured at the Games in 3D and in a 360 format with a number of events being covered using robotic cameras. This new technology gives a new dimension and insight into the world’s greatest sporting event; ensuring customers experience a unique perspective of all the action. Getty Images 3D capabilities are being pioneered by sports photographer Shaun Botterill, featured in the video, who will be leading the specialised team throughout the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Premiering at last year’s Royal Wedding, Getty Images will also be using its 360 technology to give customers another perspective on popular Olympic events. The 360 imagery will enable customers and consumers to pan in all directions on the image, as well as zoom into specific people or areas in high-definition.

Getty Images is also installing a number of robotic cameras at key Olympic sites to capture a view that would otherwise not be seen. This will be the first time fully remotely controllable robotic stills cameras have been used at an Olympic Games and by utilising technology previously only used by broadcasters, Getty Images will be able to bring stills coverage from locations previously out of reach to a photographer, such as the floodlight pylons of the Olympic Stadium.

Getty Images photographers will be at the very forefront, capturing the action with the latest technology and enabling us to supply our customers with the widest possible range of images to meet their needs. The fact that this includes 3D and 360 stills, alongside robotic capture is testament to our mission to offer innovative and ground breaking content,” said Adrian Murrell, Senior Vice President, Global Editorial, Getty Images.

With an elite roster of award-winning photographers and an unrivalled heritage of capturing both the Olympic Games and other high profile sporting events in London, this will be Getty Images’, formally AllSport’s, 13th consecutive event as the Official Photographic Agency to the IOC.
