Visualised: Every 3D movie ever made!

3D movies might seem like a new fangled phenomenon, but this staggering chart, painstakingly put together by Sony, serves to illustrate that we’ve been here before, many times.

Join us, and see the timeline of every single 3D movie ever made.

Think 3D started with The Polar Express? Guess again. In fact, the technology and experiments stretch back for more than a century. The Lumiere brothers themselves dabbled with stereoscopic film, and as you can see from the image below, which is part of a presentation given by Sony to trainee camera crew learning to shoot in 3D, there have been previous bursts of 3D popularity throughout the twentieth century.

Look closely and you’ll see that each “bubble” is decades apart – just enough time for a new generation to discover and get turned off the technology. Sony’s confident though this time that the technology is right, as indicated by the ballooning number of 3D movies in the last couple of years.
